“Bistro Vendome”

Perhaps it's a backlash against the onslaught of burgers, pizza and meatballs galore. Or maybe it's the recent glowing review of Le Grenouille by the New York Times' Sam Sifton, but it seems that French cuisine may be making a comeback.

Riding the wave is newcomer Bistro Vendome, located in the former March space on the Upper East Side. Chef Pascal Petiteau and his wife Virginie, both formerly of Jubilee, will be serving French classic and bistro fare at the townhouse they redesigned themselves for more cozy, casual eating enjoyment.

For appetizers, the menu will include items such as Escargot (in two sizes $10/$15), Endive and Bacon Salad ($10), Crispy Goat Cheese Cake ($10) as well as five variations on mussels (Provencale, Mariniere, Thai, Normande and Basilic from $13-15). Entrees include Roasted Maine Sea Scallops with Orzo and Porcini "risotto" ($25), Sole Meuniere (market price), Cassoulet ($24), Beef Cheeks Shepherd's Pie ($25), Australian Rack of Lamb with Potato Gratin and Rosemary Jus ($32) and a variety of grilled cuts of steak with frites and salad ($28-32). The place is like a little slice of Pairs. If only you could smoke.

Bistro Vendome is located at 405 East 58th Street (between First Avenue and Sutton Place), 212-935-9100 and is open seven days for lunch, dinner and Sunday brunch.
