“Reading Room”

Pete Wells skipped his regularly scheduled restaurant review this week to instead extol the virtues and pleasures of eating downtown. This was a terrific article , first because it does the valuable job of getting people to eat downtown given the revenue lost because of Sandy, and second because it reminded me of some restaurants I should be returning to (Empelon, Dirt Candy, and WD-50 for instance).

Downtown restauratuers sound off on their plight as well in the Times. In this piece by Glenn Collins, Danny Meyer speaks about the need for better emergency communications within his company given that he had to turn a bathroom of the Manhattan Square Gym into an office. Luckily, he said, the bathroom had a chair and a working power outlet, in addition to a toilet, which became his bunker office for the time of the power outage.

I also enjoyed this piece in Edible Manhattan about the firelamp cooking that went on at Northern Spy which fed neighbors during the loss of power.

There are many more stories of incredible charity and selflessness coming out every day. These are at least a litte bit of a balm to the raw wound of Sandy. Share yours below on the comment tab!
