“The Rathskeller at Buchenschank”

Buschenschank, for those of you who haven't been yet, is great spot in Carroll Gardens for lovers of beer and Germanic cuisine. The restaurant is a South Tyrolean style tavern featuring a full menu of Northern Italian and German cuisine (including homemade beer pretzels and dark mustard and overstuffed platters of wurst and sausages), with regional and local craft beers and wine. (And they also proudly serving South Brooklyn Pizza.)

This holiday season they are opening the Ratskeller, a drink and event space below the bar and restaurant. The word Ratskeller (or “Rathskeller”), translates to “council’s cellar” in German (nothing at all to do with rats, actually). Originating in Germany and now found throughout the world, ratskellers are located in the basement of popular taverns and nightclubs as an auxiliary space for live music and gatherings. In fact, The Beatles famously got their start performing skiffle music in the underground Ratskeller club in Hamburg in the early 1960s, before joining future drummer Ringo Starr’s band, the Hurricanes, in another famous ratskeller, the Kaiserkeller. The rest is history, as they say.

The Ratskeller at Buschenschank features exquisite exposed brick detailing with striking archways in the classical European style. There is a main room with its own bar with working kegs, as well as a functioning fireplace in the wiinter and A/C in warmer months. Food can be ordered from the bar and brought to adjacent smaller tables.  In addition, a long dining table sits in a private nook off the main area, seating up to 12 people. Soft lighting from large candles scattered throughout the scene further contributes to its cozy charm.

The space is open to the public most Friday and Saturday nights with live music, and is available to rent for private parties (including Fridays and Saturdays) of up to 110 people for drinks and cocktails, 30 for a sitdown dinner from our menu. Please call 718-237-0237 for more details, availability and to book weekend bands.
