“The Strand Smokehouse”

Astoria is getting a new Hill Country-styled barbecue joint—The Strand Smokehouse. With the same moniker as an iconic former movie theater that used to be located nearby, this smokehouse and drinking hall boasts both outdoor backyard and front-yard dining, plus a huge indoor dining room filled with picnic tables. The décor is urban honkey tonk, complete with white tiled walls, a cement floor, hanging lights, a wood-slotted ceiling and a stage for live country, blues and bluegrass bands. The service is cafeteria-style just like in old-time Texas meat markets, except at brunch when servers are on hand.

Former Jeffrey’s Grocery head chef Eric Milley is running the kitchen, with veteran Shane McBride aboard as consulting chef. The two have crafted a menu of smokehouse classics, including Brisket that has been brined for three days before it gets smoked over maple and hickory woods, Pork Loin, Lamb, Prime Rib, Pork Belly, Beef Ribs and much more – all of which are sourced from neighborhood purveyor Muncan Food Corp and carved to order at the restaurant.

For brunch the menu features  Duck Leg Confit with eggs over easy, braised kale, smoked tomatoes and potato hash. There is also an in–house charcuterie program  that includes house-made Duck Pastrami and Foie Gras Terrine.

The bar serves whiskey out of the barrels that they age in and specialize in small-batch brands like Larceny. There are also wines on tap, artisan sodas from Brooklyn Soda Works and 16 locally brewed beers on draft, which will change seasonally.

The Strand Smokehouse is located at 25-27 Broadway, Astoria.
