“Broadway East to Open the Weekend of March 7th!”

Broadway East, the organic eatery originally chef’d by vegetarian authority Peter Berely will open next weekend (March 7th) with a new chef at the stoves. To replace Berely, owners Ron Castellano, Joel Barkley (both are architects), and James Wong (a contractor) have installed Gwyneth Paltrow’s former personal chef Lee Gross who’s planning a predominantly vegetarian menu with a few sustainable and local poultry and fish selections. Gross was most recently the chef de cuisine in LA at M Café de Chaya, a Japanese-owned macrobiotic restaurant where he received the 2006 Star Chefs Los Angeles Rising Star Chef (LA) and was named 2006 Best New Chef, Runner Up in LA by Angelino Magazine.

Castellano's design firm, Studio Castellano is responsible for the look of the restaurant, which carries on the menu’s theme of sustainability. The downstairs bar is made from wood that was recycled from a NYC water tower and the dining room is cushioned by a “Living Green Wall,” a soil-based wall of greenery and plants that covers 240 vertical square feet of space. The restaurant composts, filters and carbonates its own water (no bottled water will be available), has a contract with a green linen company, and works with Environmental Energy Recycling Corp (an environmental service company that provides waste cooking oil collection and recycling for the food service industry).

Broadway East is located at 171 East Broadway (between Rutgers and Jefferson) across the street from Seward Park, 212-228-3100.

“I am so excited to try this Organic Hot Spot!”

I am traveling to NYC to take in a couple of Broadway Shows and am planning on hitting Broadway East to feast on all of the yummy organic items that they have. I have heard it is a huge success and cannot wait to try it myself!
