“A Celebration of Home Cooking, Saveur Style”

There are few things I enjoy more than cooking in my own kitchen .… I feel a satisfying sense of connection to what I am about to eat.

That’s how James Oseland, editor-in-chief at Saveur, opens the glossie’s 100th issue—a celebration of the home cook. And from cover to cover, the issue rejoices in the little things we do to feed and comfort the people in our lives.

Opening this issue reveals a buffet of culinary inspiration, and the centerpiece is the annual Saveur 100: Home Cook Edition. This year’s list features fifty-two rich, weighty pages of ingredients, equipment, and people both influential and essential to the “heart of the home,” and covers everything from One-Dish Feasts and Great Home Cooks to Pantry Essentials and The Right Gear. Paul Newman, Lidia Bastianich, Le Creuset, Cuisinart—all the stars are there.

But also there are the small players in the kitchen—a primer on salts, sugars, and oils; recipes for standards like ketchup, mustard, and hot sauce; and a round up of the tools every home cook should have. Every page reveals a new treasure, all wrapped in comforting warm tones and bright smiles under David Weaver’s art direction.

And if the publication of a 100th issue isn’t a reason to throw a party, then what is? The staff opened up its test kitchen to guests and brought everyone in from the January chill to savor some of the home-style dishes featured in the 100. Test kitchen director Hunter Lewis served up vegetarian lasagna, shrimp and oyster perloo, onion tart with goat cheese, cassoulet—all hearty, homey, satisfying fare that chased off the cold of the night. And to make sure no one forgot that home cooking was the guest of honor, black and white brownies and pineapple upside-down cake awaited those who made it to the end of the buffet line in the close quarters.

For 10 years, Saveur has been on a mission to help us Savor a World of Authentic Cuisine. This homage to the home cook reveals the source of their inspiration—and just what they mean when they say “authentic.” The Saveur 100 is on sale now.
