The Strong Buzz

Going to Café Gitane on Mott Street is kind of a rite of passage. Do you know anyone who has lived here more than six months who hasn’t been? Probably not. That’s because it fits the bill when you’re figuring out where to go: it’s got a groovy feel, good people watching, and straightforward French/Moroccan food at low prices. Now, a new outpost of Café Gitane is opening at The Jane Hotel in early October. Adding to the cafe’s attributes: a West Village location overlooking the Hudson River, outdoor tables with sunset views, and a full bar. Café Gitane favorites will be on the menu, including Smoked Trout Salad, Avocado Toasts and Moroccan couscous with red peppers, raisins and toasted pine nuts, as well as new dishes like Steak Frites and an organic hamburger. The new café is designed by owner Luc Levy and Robert Padilla of L'Atelier Des Arts (who designed Minetta Tavern, Balthazar and Pastis).Prices will range from $2.75 to $15 per plate.

Café Gitane at The Jane Hotel will be located at 113 Jane Street (212-255-4113).
