“Jerry's- Closed Now”

  Occasion: Cuisine: Area: Cost: Rating:
Night Out New American Soho Moderate Good

($20). It was a knock out. We also ordered a side of fries ($5)—it’s a diner after all, and fries are necessary fare at any diner—that were thin and crispy and generously seasoned with herbs, but again, they were not hot. Not sure what’s happening with the fry station.

Pizzas are still on the menu but they are now thin, flatbread style, and grilled, a trick of the trade brought in thanks to Korsh’s sous chef who used to cook at Gonzo, where chef Vincent Scotto’s hallmark is the grilled pie. There’s one with soppressata, red pepper puree and fresh ricotta and another topped with spicy cauliflower and arrabbiata sauce ($14).

There are also a few pastas—like the Spaghetti alla Turino, with black pepper, egg and Pecorino Romano ($16). Feel like a steak? Korsh is going whole-hog with a porterhouse for two ($52) with parsley shallot butter, crushed fingerling potatoes, and sautéed Swiss chard. It’s a diner after all, and he’s got something here for everyone.

Korsh also started baking all of his own desserts, and I would strongly recommend the fudge tort, really just a big ole dense and chocolaty brownie topped with vanilla gelato and fresh whipped cream and chocolate sauce. It is so rich that you only really need a bite or two, but you will finish it anyway, just like I did.

Jerry’s was just what the doctor ordered the other night. Good food in an easy setting with terrific service. (Our waitress Mim was one of the most attentive servers I have had in a while, not to mention she was gorgeous. So rare to find a gorgeous waitress in New York City, I know.) Anyway, look, I know we are all about the restaurant of the moment. They are fun and cool and hot and fabulous, and that’s all great. But when you’re exhausted and hungover from the hype and in need of the simple comfort of good food, there’s a wonderful old diner with a great new chef that’s calling your name.

Jerry’s is located at 101 Prince Street, between Greene and Mercer Streets, 212-966-9464.
