“Turks & Frogs Tribeca”

Turks and Frogs Tribcea

I had a chance to check out the new Turks and Frogs Tribeca twice this week. The first time was at the opening bash where I joined crowds to rival the Barney’s Sale to feast on Turkish wine and mezze and more. The second time, on Friday night, I went in with Debbie for a light dinner and was quite pleased to find George Clooney outside filming a movie called Michael Clayton, written and directed by The Bourne Supremacy’s Tony Gilroy. I have to tell you, George and I had a moment. Well, at least I had a moment with George. I am not sure he was totally aware of it, but he definitely looked in my direction, so I am fairly certain he was sharing the moment with me and just working up the nerve to talk to me. I know it can be intimidating to approach The Strong Buzz. Perhaps he’ll call this week.

Anyway, even without the view of Mr. Clooney outside, T&F is quite impressive. As most of you know by now, this is the second branch of the cozy West Village wine and mezze bar, but Turks and Frogs Tribeca is much more grand in scale with a downstairs wine cellar-as-lounge with a sexy Turkish bath setting: earthen clay cave walls, wine barrel tables, and a cozy “room” for large parties that seats you in an old world marble clad steam room (minus the steam of course). The upstairs dining room is furnished with pristine white tablecloth topped tables and one oversized banquette that can seat about 15. The place has that classic Orhan and Osman (the devastatingly handsome and well-dressed brothers who own the place) style, with stunning Turkish lantern lighting, and a ton of space for lounging, lingering, sipping, and dining. Aside from the strollers and toddlers and pregnant women littering the space (the place is like a pediatricians office), it feels very fabulous. Hey, don’t get the wrong idea. I love kids and I love that families are staying in the city and not retreating to the burbs. And I met a very nice six-month old named Ezra who held my hand. We had a moment too.

Meals at T&F start with a huge show and tell tray topped with all the housemade cold spreads and dips—it’s like Chinatown’s dim sum, but with mezze. You can chose from thick and creamy lebne, to hummus, braised artichokes, and a slew of spectacular eggplant preparations—smoked, spicy, fried, slow roasted, and probably in time, one that you can take home as a spa treatment. ...
