“Harvest at the Botanical Garden, Benefit for Lydia Tillman, and Pie-Making on GI”

Harvest at The New York Botanical Garden

At the New York Botanical Garden in the Bronx, children 5 to 10 years old can help harvest vegetables for pickling daily through Aug. 26 from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. in the Ruth Rea Howell Family Garden. And on Saturday and Sunday from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m., fruits and vegetables will be gathered and discussed by the staff of the Global Gardens program. Admission is free with Botanical Garden entry ($20 for adults; $18, students and those 65 and over; $8, ages 2 to 12; free to members); nybg.org.

A Benefit for Lydia Tillman

Lydia Tillman, the sommelier at Casa Mono before moving to Colorado, was the victim of a brutal attack in her home in Fort Collins, Colo., on July 4 and has been in intensive care at a local hospital. A fund-raiser to help defray her medical expenses is set for Saturday from noon to 3 p.m. at Terroir Tribeca, 24 Harrison Street (Greenwich Street). Minimum suggested donation: $20.

Pie-Making on Governor's Island

If you haven't been to GI yet this season, I implore you to get up and GO! It's gorgeous. I want to live there, in one of those yellow clapboard houses with the wrap-around porches. It's so bucolic and peaceful, truly, it will have you wondering how you stayed away so long. What's more, the ferry is free! Make your way to Picnic Point by bike (you can rent on-island), take a lazy snooze in a hammock with the salty breeze blowing in off Lady Liberty, and you'll soon realize, it's cannot be beat as a wonderful summer retreat.

To entice you to visit, how about a pie-baking contest? It takes place this Saturday. You've got to bring your pie by 3 p.m.; winners will be announced at 4:15. There is no limit to the number of pies entered. To register by midnight Friday: govislandpie@gmail.com. More details: dreamlandorchestra.com/calendar.php. Admission to the lawn party, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., is $7 in advance from the Web site; $10 at the gate; no charge for children under 12. Food and drinks will be sold.

HAPPY WEEKEND!
