“A Cassoulet Showdown, Wine School at Corkbuzz”

Warm Up With Cassoulet

While it may not help you shed those New Year's Resolution pounds, what better way to take off the winter chill than cassoulet? It’s time for the annual cassoulet cook-off at Jimmy’s No. 43 (43 East Seventh Street (Second Avenue). Held this Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m., it provides your chance to taste more than 15 of the hearty Southwestern French bean and meat casseroles made by professionals and amateurs, using local ingredients. There will be winners in the official judging and people’s choice categories; $20 at the door to benefit the Greenmarket fund for farmers hit by Tropical Storm Irene, (212) 982-3006.

A Wine Education

We’ve written before about the great new winebar Corkbuzz. Master sommelier/owner Laura Maniec's classes begin this weekend. A session on food and wine pairings is scheduled for Saturday from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and one covering sparkling wines will be held on Sunday from noon to 1:30 p.m. Each class is $50. Corkbuzz is located at 13 East 13th Street, corkbuzz.com, (646) 873-6079.

Happy Weekend!
