“Barbecue Weekend: Big Apple and Kosher BBQ ”

This weekend is all about Barbecue. For those in the City, check out the biggest barbecue situation this side of the Moon the 10th anniversary Big Apple Barbecue Block Party Weekend! And if you’re out on Long Island, come visit me while I judge the brisket and ribs (and kvetching) at the first annual Long Island Kosher Barbecue Competition sponsored by Fairway! Hope to see you there!

Big Apple Barbecue Block Party

An entire weekend of meat, firepits, hickory smoke, beer, and good old blue grass blues, the Big Apple Barbecue Block Party is back and bigger than ever for its 10th anniversary. On Saturday, June 9th and Sunday, June 10th, you too can partake in a carnivorous feast for the senses; admission is free and plates are $8 at each pitmaster’s station.

The great thing about the Big Apple Barbecue Block Party is that unlike many other events in NYC, the chefs and “pitmasters” come from all over the country as opposed to just locals. Sure we have the geniuses at Hill Country, Blue Smoke, and Dinosaur from NYC, but we also have Barbeque masters from The Salt Lick (TX), Jim n Nicks (AL), Jack’s Old South (GA), Ubons Barbeque (MS), and many more.

What really takes you out of New York City and puts you in a southern mood? The music of course – and the BABBP is proud to present two days of traditional and emerging bands from blue grass to rock and soul. The lineup includes Jon Langford, JC Brooks & The Uptown Sound, Southern Culture on Skids, Roadside Graves, The Revelations featuring Tre Williams, and Alejandro Escovedo. The Big Apple Barbecue Block Party will be held at Madison Square Park, from 11 am – 6 pm. Click here for more information!

Long Island Kosher Barbecue Championship

Kosher folks can barbecue too; maybe not with swine but with lots of smoky beef! I’ll be part of the judging crew this Sunday at the first annual Long Island Kosher BBQ Championship (www.likosherbbq.org) to be held at Temple Beth Torah in Westbury, New York on Sunday, June 10th, 2012 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Open to all without charge, this event is modeled after, and sanctioned by, the ASBEE World Kosher BBQ Championship in Memphis, Tennessee. The day’s events include opening ceremonies led by local elected officials and a BBQ cooking contest featuring up to 25 teams from around the country, competing in categories including Best Brisket, Best Ribs, Best Beans, Most Original Team Name and Best Booth Decoration. Families and guests can enjoy a variety of food as well as children’s activities in a Kiddie Corral featuring inflatable bounce houses and slides, face painting, balloon artists and a petting zoo. The event will also feature music, games and contests ranging from hot dog and pickle eating contests to a basketball skills competition.

Proceeds from the event will be donated to locally-based hunger relief charities including Long Island Cares, “the INN” (Interfaith Nutrition Network), Hatzilu, Rock Can Roll, M’yad l’yad and Temple Beth Torah. In addition to title sponsorship by Fairway Market, other organizations pledging their support include Astoria Federal Savings, Batampte Pickles, Home Depot, Jetmore Fireplace & BBQ Center, Long Island Blood Services, MBIA, Mid Island Animal Hospital, Progressive Urology and S&S Cheesecake.

Team registration is now open and sponsorship opportunities are most welcomed. For more information about the Long Island Kosher BBQ Championship and a list of the day’s activities, please visit www.likosherbbq.org!
