“A Passage to India ”

New Yorkers love the international selection of cuisine at their disposal at anytime of the day. The difficult part? Separating the winners from the snoozers, whether it’s the spicy pad Thai or the lightest falafel. Indian food falls into this tricky category, so when we hear about a place worth checking out, we love to share the details.

At Tamba, which has been in soft opening mode since earlier this month,  husband-and-wife team Sikender and Daljeet Malik have brought not only the food of India but also dishes with flavors of Kabul and Kandahar to the Murray Hill neighborhood.

The restaurant’s name means “cooper” and it aims to remain authentic with a wide-range of dishes: from classic tandoori breads ($2.95-$4.95) and biryani dishes ($8.95-$16.95) to dosas ($8.95-$15.95) and pepper fry mutton ($16.95).

With seating for 50, the space draws on the cooper theme throughout the restaurant with cooper-colored walls, light fixtures and artwork.

It’s not their first foray in New York, though. The Maliks opened Malika in Midtown 15 years ago and they also opened Malika Palace near JFK, where they’ve hosted many dignitaries and international customers in the spacious restaurant. They’re focused on bringing fresh, healthy dishes to their home — New York.

Tamba is located at 103 Lexington Ave. (between 27th and 28th Streets), 212-481-9100, www.tambagrillandbar.com.
