“Please Support The Strong Buzz Team in Cycle for Survival on February 12th!”

While most of you know me as a food writer, I am also Managing Editor of BLS LawNotes, the alumni magazine of my alma mater, Brooklyn Law School. I write the magazine, cover-to-cover and profile some of our alumni, write about the Law School's programs and clinics and our students' work. I also write obituaries. This is something I have never done before, and it's something that has made a big impact on me over the past three years.

Before this, I always wrote about the living. Now, I write for the dead. I write about their accomplishments, their families, and all that they have left behind. While many of the people I have profiled in our In Memoriam section have lived long beautiful lives, many have had their lives cut tragically short by cancer. A forty-year old mother of two small children right here in Brooklyn, most recently. I wrote about her short but wonderful life, and I felt the stinging loss of her children, who will grow up never knowing the mother who loved them, who brought them into this world, and who would have loved to have seen them grow. As a mother, these obituaries are brutal to write, and they are part of what has led me to join Cycle for Survival.

Co-founded in 2007 by Jennifer Goodman Linn and her husband, Dave, Cycle for Survival is the national, indoor relay-style team cycling event that has raised more than $9 million in support of lifesaving research on rare cancers at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, and in the past five years has funded twenty-five clinical trials and research studies.

Every dollar raised by Cycle goes directly to Memorial Sloan-Kettering for research on rare cancers, paving the way for new, more effective treatment options.

My Strong Buzz team (myself, my husband Craig, and my good friends Susie and Brian) will be riding on Sunday February 12th. My goal for the ride is $5000 and I am almost there. You can help! If you'd like to support my ride, you can donate here.

I don't harbor any illusions that we can beat cancer today, or tomorrow, but every dollar we raise when we ride will bring us one day closer to saving lives. Maybe one day, there won't be as many obituaries to write.

Remember, 100% of every dollar raised goes directly to Memorial Sloan-Kettering for research on rare cancers, paving the way for new, more effective therapies. Together, we can truly make a difference.

Thank you.

Andrea
