“Things Get Screwy on Long Island”

Screw Caps are coming to the East End. Paumanok Vineyards has just announced the release of five 2007 vintage white wines—Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, Dry and Semi Dry Riesling and Festival Chardonnay—all sealed with the Stelvin screw cap closure. These mark the first bottlings on Long Island to use a screw cap.

The change to screw cap from cork follows a gradual shift in the wine business. “Since it is well known that natural cork will occasionally taint the wine, we needed a closure that does not compromise wine quality,” said Charles Massoud, Paumanok's founder and owner in a press release today. “It has been documented to our satisfaction that the Stelvin screw cap is, in that respect, superior to cork.”

For now, Paumanok is limiting this closure to its white wine. However, Paumanok red wines will be offered with screw cap in the near future. Consideration is being given to bottling the same red wine with cork and screw cap to give the consumer a choice between the two. For more information and to visit Paumanok and taste their wines, go to www.paumanok.com or call 631.722.8800.

“The Case For Screwcaps...”

Screwcaps are ideal for wines that are meant to be drunk young. Let's face it, most of us will drink a bottle of wine within 24 hours of purchasing it. There are no studies completed yet on whether screwcaps can stand the test of time because they are a recent phenomenon. For wines intended to be enjoyed within a year they are a safe bet, especially because there is zero chance of cork taint. Want to try a taste of the Paumanmok wines?
