“South Street's Newest Restaurant: Fish Market Opens”

The Fulton Street Fish Market may be closed (sigh), but a restaurant in honor of its long (180 years) of life, is now open. Owned by Jeannette Josue and Vincent Camporeale, Fish Market is a cozy and snug with views of the Brooklyn Bridge, exposed brick walls, vintage pressed copper ceilings, nautical lamps and photographic displays of the Fulton Fish Market in the 1930’s.

The menu, by chef of Chef Eddie Montalvo (he’s cooked in the kitchens of Jean-Georges and Laurent Gras) is ambitious (and pricey), but sounds quite good. He showcases the sea and the seasons in plates like morel fricassee with poached organic egg, asparagus, and shaved mimolette cheese ($15), grilled flatbread topped with Warm Humboldt Fog cheese, caramelized onion, cerignola olives, and a fried organic egg ($12), almond soup garnished with roasted lobster and tangerine ($12), pesce crudo—citrus cured salmon, shrimp ceviche, yellowfin tuna with ginger and lemon ($16), and foie bon bons with honey-raisin jam, chicharron de arroz ($13).

His short list of entrees for two to share include a whole branzino ($37) with clams, tapioca, shaved baby fennel, saffron-citrus broth and Wolfneck Farms “Natural” Angus NY Strip topped with lemon gremolata, served over olive oil crushed potatoes and ramps ($38), as well as an organic chicken with parsnip puree, black trumpets, and almond pepitoria ($27).

At the bar, Motalvo is serving a fun menu of bite sized eats—fried quail eggs with crispy Serrano ham and rice crisps ($13), Serrano ham croquettes with honey-raisin jam and parsnip ($7), and citrus-marinated mussels with crushed pepper and mint ($10).

Fish Market Restaurant is located at 111 South Street, between Beekman and Peck Slip, (212) 233-3301. Dinner is served nightly from 6pm – 11pm.
