the buzz

“Watty & Meg ”

Last week, at five in the evening (in time for cocktails) on Wednesday May 6th, we welcomed a little baby girl into the world—Emily Juliet. More on the experience of labor and delivery later (don’t worry I won’t turn this into a Ricky Lake documentary), but more to the point of this blog, we took her for a walk in the neighborhood, strolling on a sunny breezy Mother’s Day evening to the newest arrival in our neighborhood—a corner restaurant on Court and Kane street called Watty and Meg.

The restaurant, which borrows its name from a ballad by Scottish naturalist Alexander Wilson, replaces Caffe Carciofo with an outdoor sidewalk patio and a bistro warmed by chocolate wood and a long inviting bar. It's owned by the folks from Building on Bond and chef Sosie Hublitz who hails from Virginia (her last restaurant was wiped out in 2004 by Hurricane Gaston) and in its week of life, it's already become quite popular.

Indeed, it seemed we weren’t the only ones curious about this newborn—there was a line practically into the street for a table. While we passed on waiting, we did take a look at the menu and we’re looking forward to bringing Emily back for her first “real” meal.

On the American menu you’ll find starters like Merguez with warm lentil salad ($11), grilled shrimp with spring corn salsa ($10), fennel slad with orange, pine nuts and cilantro ($9), and mains like garlic shrimp with cheese grits and collard green stew ($16), crispy skinned organic salmon with quinoa cous cous, sautéed kale and juniper berry sauce ($21), a burger made from grass fed organic beef with fries ($12), and more healthy alternatives like quinoa and spring vegetable bowl with a poached egg ($14). For dessert, fruit cobbler, and lime tart with vanilla ice cream ($8).

Watty and Meg is located at 248 Court St., 718-643-0007.
