“Food Wheels Teach Seasonality: Chew on This”

Eating locally, healthfully, and seasonally may just a few of the goals (er, resolutions) that may be on your agenda for 2009 (along with exercising regularly, flossing, remembering to Tivo the next season of Mad Men). Sometimes the best laid plans. Well, two young entrepreneurs have come up with a way to put the first few goals into practice with their New York Area Food Wheels. (You’re on your own with the flossing and exercise).

Private chef and wellness expert Carlin Greenstein (she’s worked with folks like George Lucas, Harvey Weinstein and Vincent D’Onofrio) and graphic designer Annie Stranger have teamed up to create two practical and easy to use “food wheels” that aim to show you how you can eat seasonally and locally and thereby support the local economy and your health.

The first one, “The New York Area Food Wheel,” is geared toward making shopping locally and seasonally as simple as possible by identifying the peak season and availability of 50 fruits and vegetables. Whether you’re a working parent or a fourth grader, you’ll be able to figure out what to buy in April (ramps, fiddleheads) and what not to buy in March (stone fruits). It’s a quick and easy reference wheel that you can use wherever you’re shopping whether it’s at the Greenmarket or your local grocery to help you make decisions on what to put in your canvas bag and what to keep out.

Their second wheel, an Illustrated Guide to 40 Culinary Herbs, teaches you everything you’ve always wanted to know about herbs but where afraid to ask. You’ll learn which parts of the herbs are best and how to use them to add flavor and healthfulness to your meals. The back of the Culinary Herb food wheel provides practical tips on how to use dried versus fresh herbs, and advice on washing, handling, preparing, and storing your fresh herbs, as well as a few key recipes for menu accents like herb butter, herb vinaigrette, and pesto sauce.

These are the perfect gift for someone (perhaps you) who’s trying to change the way they eat and needs a little help to figure it all out. The wheels are $11 each or $20 for both and are available at www.chewonthis.org.
