“Wine Benefit for L'Aquila Earthquake Relief Fund, Late Night at Macao, Brunch at Sorella”

Friday:
A Wine Benefit for the L'Aquila Earthquake Relief Fund
at Italian Wine Merchants, 108 East 16th Street, b/w Union Square and Irving Place, 212-473-2323

Join Italian Wine Merchants Friday evening for a special evening of wine and food including more than 20 regional wines provided by Domaine Select Wine Estates complemented by a tasting of Apennine specialties of the Abruzzo region.  Your donation ($75 minimum) will benefit the victims of the L'Aquila earthquake. One hundred percent of your donation will be sent to the National Italian American Foundation (NIAF)/Abruzzo Relief Fund. Should the urge strike you to purchase wine from Italian Wine Merchants that evening (a smart idea, if you ask me), IWM will donate 20% of the value of your purchase to the NIAF Abruzzo Relief Fund.

About NIAF’s Fundraising Efforts: The National Italian American Foundation (NIAF) has established a special NIAF/Abruzzo Relief Fund to help the victims and their families who perished from the recent earthquake in the town of L'Aquila and other small towns in the surrounding areas.

Saturday: Late Night at Macao Trading Company, 311 Church Street, b/w Walker & Lispenard, 212-431-8642

If you’re out and about Saturday night and in need of a little late night bite, check out Macao Trading Company’s new late night menu served from 12am to 3:30am (seven nights a week). The menu includes Red Cooked Pork Buns ($11) stuffed with Kimchi and Cucumber, Crispy Duck Wings ($11) dusted in Szechuan Peppercorn and served with a Black Bean Sauce, Crispy Prawns and Chili Sauce ($28), and the hangover cure of all time— Congee (Chinese style rice porridge) with pork belly and mustard greens ($9). Trust me on this one, it works.

Sunday: Brunch at Sorella, 95 Allen Street, b/w Delancey and Broome, 212-274-9595

French toast with Mascarpone, sugared bacon and Grand Marnier poached pears ($14), smoked salmon with fried semolina, robiolina, meyer lemon, shallots and cracked pepper ($13), and a weekly changing egg dish (MP) are among the dishes on the new brunch menu served every Sunday starting at 11am at Emma Hearst’s wonderful Piedmontese restaurant, Sorella. If you haven’t been for dinner yet, you can also try some of her pastas at brunch, including Tajarin with lamb ragu, ricotta, pistachios and mint ($12), and her lasagna layered with braised rabbit, fennel, prosciutto cotto, and Parmesan ($15). Twenty-five wines by the glass, mimosas and other Sunday sparklers are on the beverage menu. This is the ideal place for a more intimate brunch for two in the modern dining room, or for a larger group of friends in the communal tables in the front bar room.
