“Edible Gardens, Running for Burgers, and Flash Back to the 80s”

All Weekend (and all summer): The Edible Garden at The New York Botanical Garden

At this point, eating local, sustainable food has become both accepted and fashionable.  (I mean, there’s a garden on the White House Lawn.) But sometimes the locavore label can seem more like proselytizing than encouragement – where’s the fun? The New York Botanical Garden’s summer-long celebration brings together celebrity chefs, veggies, flowers, and beer to show you how this thing that’s good for you (and the environment) is also a good time.

The event takes place throughout the Garden’s 250-acre landscape where, from June 27 to September 13, there will be exhibits (like Martha Stewart’s Culinary Herb Garden and the Beginner’s Vegetable Garden), a flower show in the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory (Tropical Fruits, Roots, and Shoots) and even an Edible Audio Tour narrated by Mario Batali and Bette Midler (!), with commentary by Dan Barber of Blue Hill, explaining the origins of the food we eat and how it gets from farm to table.

There will also be two full-on festival weekends: The Edible Local Garden (June 27-28) celebrates the local and sustainable food movement, with cooking demonstrations, food, wine and beer tastings on the Terrace, Q&As with gardening experts and book signings with cookbook and gardening authors. The Edible Global Garden: Buy Local, Cook Global (September 12-13), focuses on food culture from around the world, with cooking and gardening demos, a gathering of cookbook authors, and tastings of food, wine and beer from far-flung places.

Take a look at the summer’s schedule (nybg.org) –  there are different plant and flower tours of the gorgeous grounds, nighttime food and drink events (like A Taste of Arthur Avenue and Grilling from the Garden), kids’ events – really, just great stuff.

The New York Botanical Garden is located at Bronx River Parkway and Fordham Road.
