“Late Day Brunch at Commerce, Van Leeuwen Sundae Social, Food Career Seminar ”

All Weekend: New Brunch Menu at Commerce, 50 Commerce St. (between Barrow and Morton), 212-524-2301

The hardest part of weekend brunching is climbing out of bed. The crew at Commerce made it easier for us sleepy heads by extending hours on Sunday to 4 p.m. long ago. But last week Chef Harold Moore officially tweaked the brunch menu to go beyond his contemporary-American twist on eggs and bacon at this cozy restaurant. The options will be more lunch friendly. The pork schnitzel ($19) is a huge piece of porcine heaven that’s sautéed rather than fried for a crispy crust. There’s also a Croque Madame ($16) that combines creamy béchamel with ham and Gruyere. Or you can go simple with a grilled cheese ($17) with Dallego cheese, tomato and bacon. A delicious brunch in a quaint corner of Greenwich Village in an historic space sounds like a good reason to get of bed.

Sunday: Ice Cream Sundae Sunday Social with Ben Van Leeuwen and Fritz Knipschildt at Murray’s Cheese, 254 Bleecker Street, 212-243-3289

I don’t know about you, but I love ice cream and I don’t really need an excuse to eat it, but since the weather has been so grand lately, I'll take that as all the reason I need. I’m hooked on Blue Marble and Sweet Melissa’s but I’ve also got a sweet spot for Van Leeuwen’s artisan ice cream that’s served from an refurbishes yellow postal truck in Park Slope. If you’re a fan, stop in at Murray’s Bleecker Street on Sunday from 1 – 4 pm, and you’ll not only have a great sundae, you’ll also get to meet Van Leeuwen founder Ben Van Leeuwen chocolatier Fritz Knipschildt (he’s a real life Willy Wonka). Ben will scoop his fresh flavors, while Fritz tops it all off with his decadent dessert sauces. They’ll be crowned with house-whipped cream from Hail's Family Farm. There are no reservations necessary. Just show up at the shop and your ice cream dreams will come true. Sundaes are $5 each.
