“Brunch at Beppe, Kids on the Farm, Brooklyn Flea Indoors”

Brunch at Beppe, 45 East 22nd Street, (212) 982-8422
Winter’s big chill is on in full force, and it has me bundled up and craving a nice roaring fire and a big bowl of fresh pasta. You can get both starting this weekend at brunch at Beppe where chef Marc Taxiera’s menu of Pannatoni ‘French’ Toast (thick slices of pannatoni dipped in a vanilla-egg batter then toasted and topped with cinnamon and homemade whipped cream), Eggs Purgatorio (Two eggs poached in tomato sauce over garlic toast and topped with grated Grana Padano cheese), Norcino (“Butcher’s spaghetti with crumbled pork, garlic, Chianti, rosemary and tomato) and brick oven pizzas and calzones, will be served in front of the restaurant’s blazing hearth. It feels a little like a slice of Tuscany in there, which is the idea when winter’s vice is on tight.

Kids on the Farm, Muscoot Farm, Somers, NY, http://www.muscootfarm.org/
If you’re looking for something to do with the kids this weekend, take them on a field trip to Muscoot Farm in nearby Somers, NY (only about an hour drive or MetroNorth). On Sunday at 1 and 2 p.m., the farm will offer classes to show children how farm animals survive in winter. The farm was originally a "Gentleman's Farm" owned by the Hopkins Family and used as their summer estate and dairy farm from 1880 to 1924. In 1924 the family moved to the farm year-round and continued the dairy business until 1967 when Westchester County acquired the property.

Today, Muscoot Farm is a Westchester County Park that preserves some of the agricultural history of the county. In addition to attending the class you and the kids can stroll through the original barns visiting with the animals, participate in educational programs and take longer hikes on over seven miles of trails. Best of all, it’s free!

Brooklyn Flea Moves Indoors to One Hanson Place

If you love the Flea but can’t take the wind chill, you’ll be pleased to know that it has moved indoors to One Hanson Place. The Flea at One Hanson will take place for 12 weekends only, from January 9/10 through March 27/28. The market will be open from 10am to 5pm, Saturday and Sunday. Starting April 3+4, the Flea returns to its outdoor locations, through November: Saturdays in Fort Greene and Sundays in DUMBO. (The 81 Front St. location will no longer be used this winter.)

With 100 vendors taking over teller windows, banking kiosks, secret rooms, and even the former vault in the landmark space—which features 63-foot ceilings, giant stained-glass windows, gorgeous tile mosaics, ornate Art Deco details, even a "whisper wall"—the Flea is presenting dozens of small businesses in a former monument to commerce, while also opening up this historic space to the public. The location above 10 subway lines and the LIRR provides easy access for visitors from across the region, and the majestic setting is an attraction unto itself.

To highlight the grandeur of the space, the Flea is partnering with Skylight One Hanson to present a historical seminar/tour led by preeminent NYC historian and author (The Neighborhoods of Brooklyn; The Encyclopedia of New York City, editor-in-chief) Kenneth Jackson. Details of the event will be available soon.

In addition to top antiques and vintage furniture and clothing, handmade goods, jewelry, and design objects on three floors (including the beautiful mezzanine), the Flea at One Hanson will feature its stable of delicious food vendors—inside the lower-level vault, which guests enter through enormous three-ton bank doors. Market mainstays such as Rafael Soler's pupusas, Red Hook Lobster Pound lobster rolls, Choncho's Tacos fish tacos, and Asia Dog will be there, alongside a few new food vendors, including Milk Truck's artisanal grilled cheese sandwiches, and Kors d'Oeuvres' small-batch dips and spreads. Yum.
