“The Giving Room, Long Island Winterfest Jazz, Becoming a Responsible Carnivore”

The Giving Room
If you’re out on Long Island for the holiday weekend, be sure and stop in for the launch of The Giving Room, a new concept that marries three of my favorite things: art, yoga and philanthropy. The space will serve as an art gallery (featuring local painters, sculptors, photographers, and more), yoga studio (with a schedule of rigorous, heart-opening classes by Claire Jannuzzi), and community philanthropy center that opens this weekend.

To celebrate the launch of this multi-faceted spiritual space, The Giving Room is throwing a party on Saturday that starts with a yoga class with Claire Jannuzzi (one of the most wonderful teachers I've ever had) in the morning and ends with a cocktail soiree featuring desserts from Claudia Fleming at the North Fork Table and Inn and a small arts auction from 6-8pm. The Giving Room is located in Southhold at 56215 Main Road, Southold, NY, 631-766-3233, www.givingroom.net. All proceeds from the evening benefit CAST, which supports local community programs.

Long Island Wine Tasting and Jazz Fest

If you’re already out East for the launch of the Giving Room, then you’re in luck because you’ll also catch the Long Island Winterfest Jazz on the Vine concert series that’s running every weekend afternoon from February 13 to March 21. It’s free to attend the more than 60 live jazz concerts playing on Saturdays and Sundays.
As you listen to strands of New Orleans-style jazz or a saxophonist improvising on some blues, you can sip on some cherry-scented Cabernet or sweet Riesling at various tasting rooms. Some of the vineyards include: Wolffer Estate, Clovis Point, Bedell Cellars and Sparkling Point. The events happen along the East End of Long Island, so check www.liwinterfest.com for a complete schedule and directions.

The Responsible Carnivore: Hands-On Cooking with Sustainable Meat

A lot has been written of late about nose-to-tail eating and sustainable meat practices. If Michael Pollan has gotten you thinking about the impact your food choices have on the planet, and Food, Inc. has sworn you off of factory-farmed meat for good, you need to learn about how to be a responsible carnivore. Join chef Emily Peterson at the Astor Center on Saturday where she will run a class designed to teach you how to make responsible, cost-effective choices in the meat department as well as techniques for preserving the farm-based flavor.

The menu will include Crostini di Fegatini (Chicken Paté on Toast), Spicy Asian-style Pork in Butter Lettuce Purses, Chef Emily's Secret Family Recipe Lemon Chicken, and Grilled Marinated Hangar Steaks with Fresh Herb Chimmichurri. And, as no meal at Astor Center is complete without wine, a resident wine expert will lead you on a tasting tour of some organic, biodynamic, and natural wine pairings for your culinary creations. The class takes place this Saturday, February 13th, 12:00 - 4:00 and is $125 per person.
