“Breakfast with Mama, Free Wine Class, Help with Hungry with Tom Colicchio and Natalie Portman”

Mama’s Food Shop takes on Brunch

Lately, brunch is too much of a scene for my tastes. Back in the day I might have wanted to dress in my best daywear (and sunglasses, natch) and show up at Pastis at 1pm and drink Bloody Marys until 3pm when a table might finally be ready. These days, I’m much more of an 11:30 brunch gal (gasp!), but that’s when Emily’s up from her morning nap and we can head out for a nice leisurely morning meal with as little scene as possible. Here in Brooklyn we are regulars at Jolie, Char No. 4 and Buttermilk Channel. But if I were still living in Manhattan I’d definitely make Mama’s a regular stop on my weekend outings.

They’ve just started serving brunch that includes Southern favorites like sweet potato biscuits and gravy with poached or scrambled eggs, slow-roasted pork shoulder sandwiches with whole grain mustard, pickled red onions, and mixed greens, corn bread & pork stuffing with eggs any style, and banana bread pudding or homemade coffee cake of the day for dessert. The best part? Mama’s brunch menu is a bang for your buck with a choice of one entrée, one side, and coffee or orange juice, all for just $13.  Bring your own stroller.

Mama’s is located at 200 East 3rd Street (btwn Ave. A and B.), 212.777.4425
