“From Mexico to Japan, Two (not-to-miss) Cooking Classes this Weekend”

Cooking with Sue

If you’ve eaten at Sue Torres’ Suenos, you know Mexican food is more than just chips dipped in guacamole or some meat tossed with rice and beans stuffed between a flour tortilla. At her Chelsea restaurant, Sueños, Torres cooks up dishes ranging from chile-rubbed goat wrapped in banana leaves to tamarind-glazed hanger steaks. Now you can learn from the chef.

Torres is bringing back her Saturday cooking classes starting February 27th (they run through May). They run from noon to 12:30 p.m. at Suenos and costs $75 per person, with a minimum of at least eight people signed up beforehand. The first class walks you through basic chips and salsa but also includes lessons on fresh-pressed corn tortillas and shredded BBQ beef mini tacos with pico de gallo and queso fresco. The proceeds from the first class will also benefit PS 91, a public elementary school in Crown Heights, and its programs to promote health awareness. Sign up early and have fun!

Sueños is located at 311 W. 17th St. (near Eighth Ave.), 212-243-1333, www.suenosnyc.com.

Roll With It, Kids

Teaching your kids something new is always fun, and when that something new has to do with cooking, it’s even better. Ruby Foo’s is hosting a special lunchtime tutorial where you and your youngster(s) can all learn together how to roll sushi like the best of them. The hands-on class is sure to be a hit with anyone, young or old. And if sushi rolling doesn’t sound challenging enough, they will also be teaching the art of origami.

Both you and your child can learn what it’s like to be a master of the art of sushi rolling on Saturday, February 27th from 11:30-1:30. The class is recommended for kids 5-10 and the cost is $40 (plus tax and gratuity) for one adult and one child and each additional child is only $15. Also check out future classes like Dumplings and Dim Sum (3/20), Spring Rolls, Egg Rolls, and More (4/24) and Ruby Foo’s Dessert (5/8).

Ruby Foo’s Time Square is located at 1626 Broadway at W50th Street. Email Events@brguestinc.com or call 212-331-0328 to reserve your spots.
