May Day, German Style at Loreley

May Day is celebrated in parts of Germany with Tanz in den Mai ("Dance into May") festivities. This Saturday April 30, Loreley Williamsburg (64 Frost St., 718-599-0025, www.loreleynyc.com) will kick off beer garden season with its own "Tanz in den Mai" celebration with beer, brats and music.

At 7pm, a ceremonial keg of Gaffel Kölsch beer will be tapped with each guest receiving a free beer as long as the keg lasts. From 3pm, five different sausage platters will be offered, featuring German and international style sausages from Schaller & Weber, as well as locally made ones from Loreley Williamsburg’s neighbor Meat Hook at the Brooklyn Kitchen, all accompanied by Loreley’s hearty serving of housemade sauerkraut and mashed potatoes – excellent to share. They’ll include 3, 5, 7, 9 or 12 types of sausages ($16-$38).

While Bratwurst (pork, veal & beef), Knackwurst (pork & veal), Wiener (pork & beef) and Weisswurst (veal and fresh bacon) are well known, guests will have a chance to try lesser known types such as the mildly spicy Bauernwurst (pork & beef) seasoned with mustard seed, English Bangers, Hungarian Kolbase, Meat Hook’s Chorizo, Hot Italian and Red Wine & Rosemary, and Nürnberger, a marvelous small, thin pork-based bratwurst from Nuremberg that’s scented with marjoram and packs a lot of flavor – not to be missed.

11th Annual Taste of the Lower East Side

Grand Street Settlement will host its 11th Annual Taste of the Lower East Side on April 28th, 2011 at 82 Mercer, and nearly 50 restaurants from the Lower East Side and surrounding neighborhoods will be participating. Each eatery will serve a trademark dish accompanied by specialty cocktails, beer and wine donated by major beverage sponsors. 100% of the proceeds benefit Grand Street Settlement’s services for low-income children, youth and families living on the Lower East Side and in Bushwick, Brooklyn. Most of these families are NYCHA public-housing residents.

Long-time participants, such as wd-50, Clinton St. Baking Company & Restaurant, and The Stanton Social, will join forces with newcomers including Beauty & Essex, Osteria Morini and The Fat Radish to offer tastes from their menus.  Special guests include Victor Rasuk, star of HBO’s “How to Make it in America” and a Grand Street Settlement board member, and Alicia Sanchez, “Food Network Star” contestant and Grand Street Settlement’s cooking instructor. The event will also feature a live DJ, a silent auction, and raffle prizes.
