Taste of the Seaport

It used to be that the southern tip of Manhattan transformed into a ghost town of sorts once the Wall Street crowd left for the day. Not anymore. Today there are more exciting restaurants and food options to check out between the 9/11site and the wonderful New Amsterdam Market on the weekends. The growing community in the area is no doubt a reason for all the culinary changes. The second annual Taste of the Seaport Festival on October 9, which takes place along the Historic Front Street from Fulton Street to Peck Slip, is throwing a fundraising event for the Spruce Street School P.S. 397 (for their art, music and PE offerings). It's the first public school to open in Lower Manhattan since 2001 and one of only two public schools with kindergarten through eighth grade in the area. From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. that day, though, more than 20 local restaurants and merchants will offer tastings for the fundraiser. It's $25 for five tastings or for groups, $100 for 20 tastings. You can buy tickets at: http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/202441. A family-friendly event, there will be free children's activities and a booth run by the students at Spruce Street School.
