“Food on Film, JB Cookbook Sale, Brunch on the Spanish Seaside”

Food on Film

In more than 70 cities nationwide, Whole Foods Market is sponsoring showings of six films that have to do with food and the environment, among other themes. In New York on Saturday at 6 p.m. at City Cinemas Village East, 181 Second Avenue (12th Street), "Planeat," about the benefits of a vegetarian diet, will be shown, and on Monday the same theater will have "Lunch Line," about children from Chicago trying to improve school lunches and who wound up at the White House. Information and complete schedules, as well as tickets ($13): dosomethingreel.com.

Check Out the Beard Foundation Biannual Cookbook Sale

If collecting cookbooks is an addiction for you (as it is for me), you must check out the James Beard Foundation's 11th biannual cookbook sale on April 16 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. We're guessing there won't be copies of the much-ballyhooed "Modernist Cuisine" but at past book sales, I've seen great new and old books (most will range between $1 and $20). You almost feel like you're going through James Beard's personal library with so many books scattered throughout his home. Here's a tip: go early if you can because it can get competitive getting the best books. If you're a member, just bring your card and you can get started at 9:30 a.m. There's no admission fee and proceeds benefit the Beard Foundation.

The James Beard House is located at 167 West 12th St. (between Sixth and Seventh Avenues)

Brunch on the Spanish Seaside

Recently opened Cadaqués (188 Grand Street, Williamsburg, 718-218-7776, http://www.cadaquesny.com/) brings authentic modern Spanish tapas to Williamsburg in a warm, stylish space.  Designed and built by owner Mathieu Reboul, Cadaqués is homage to the seaside Spanish fishing village that Salvador Dali called home and where Reboul's parents were married. Cadaqués (188 Grand Street, Williamsburg, 718-218-7776, http://www.cadaquesny.comis/ is now brunch Saturdays and Sundays from 11am - 4pm, offering a selection of tapas and hamburgers, as well as a brunch special for $14.95 that includes a choice from a menu of bocadillos (sandwiches), egg dishes and sweet options with coffee, orange juice, plus a choice of mimosa, screwdriver or bloody mary. Live music will start in the coming weeks.

The brunch special features Huevos Rancheros (eggs baked in tomato sauce with onions, peppers and potatoes), Huevos Fritos, (fried eggs with mushrooms and paprika shoestring potatoes), as well as delicious Torrijas, a Spanish French toast with honey and berries; Tortitas de Aceite de Olivo, pancakes made with olive oil and Churros with dipping sauces.

A la carte options include a selection of tapas--Minute Tortillas - individual Spanish potato omelets baked to order; grilled hanger steak with eggs, patatas bravas and greens; as well as hamburgers: a Spanish Burger with caramelized onions and choice of cabrales, tetilla, manchego or mahon cheese and the Cadaqués Burger with avocado, piquillo pepper, tomato, mushrooms and caramelized onions.

To wash it all down, try one of their house-infused rum cocktails or a traditional Mimosa, Bloody Mary, Screwdriver or Sangria (all also available by the pitcher). Cheers!

“Huevos Rancheros at a Spanish Place?”

I found it strange that a Spanish restaurant that prides itself on being authentic would have a Huevos Rancheros special for brunch. I headed to their website to check the menu and didn't find that dish. Maybe it was an off the menu offering...in which case it should be pointed out. In my opinion they are doing themselves a disservice by serving a Mexican dish in an otherwise authentic Spanish concept. If anything, I think they should embolden the offerings by making them more Spanish.
