“Paradou”

Night Out French MeatPacking Cheap Eats Great

I know Pastis is great. But it is also ALWAYS packed. The food is terrific, the decor is left bank chic, and the scene is always on full throttle, so there is good reason for the crowds. But when you actually care to hear what your dining companion has to say-- and I agree that there are times when you want to go to a place where this is not possible--but when you do want to actually converse, and eat really well to boot, you might want to check out Paradou - caddy corner across the street. Yes it is possible, in this über-hip land of stiletto flip flops known as the Meat Packing District, you’ll find a sweet, sunny spot to relax over wine, cheese, charcuterie and conversation. Paradou is a gem of a French wine bar with little pretense (but occassionally long lines). Literally Paradise in French, this shoebox-sized spot serves wines by the glass, carafe, or bottle (with a liberal tasting policy), matched with a marvelous mess of regional snacks from Provence, like whisper-thin crepes (sweet and savory), braised rabbit, coq au vin, plates of cheese and charcuterie, and tartines (think French bruschetta). To bring you even close to paradise, Paradou boasts one of the most charming gardens in the city, perfect for dinner under the (alleged) stars, and/or afternoon games of petanque.
