Don’t worry, she’s got plenty for omnivores too. There’s a grilled Hampshire porterhouse pork chop ($21) with roasted fingerling potatoes, escarole, capers, mustard seeds and fresh oregano, and a roasted leg of lamb with cracked wheat, feta, charred eggplant, and arugula dressed in a smoky tomato vinaigrette ($19).
Before I knew it, we were passing around a quickly diminishing dish of coffee and chocolate semifreddo (delicious and ideal for a hot summer night) and realizing it was way past our bedtime for our babies’ 6am wake up calls. It was almost 11 (!), quite a bit later than I’ve been out in probably a year. But the time had flown by. I imagine there was talk of our kids, of Tate’s new ability to run, of Nate’s long blond hair, of Jules’ infinite affection for being held upside down, but I can’t really recall what it is we talked about. I know I laughed until my face hurt. I know I felt a kinship I was so grateful to find. I know we polished off two bottles of Paumanok Rose, so I guess that’s a good sign. I know we didn’t have to get up from the table seventeen times a minute to run after Tate, to change a diaper, or to pick up a bottle or a toy that had been tossed on the floor. Oh, it was heaven.
Thistle Hill Tavern is located at 441 7th Avenue, corner of 15th Street, 347-599-1262.
