“Barrio Chino”

Night Out Latin/Mexican Lower East Side Cheap Eats Great

Barrio Chino Barrio Chino is one of those places that seduces you with its simple, hip, and understated charms. Located in Chinatown, this modest taco and tequila hang opened this past August on a quiet stretch of Broome Street. Accented with maple-toned wood and decorated with red and cream colored Chinese lanterns, with chunky communal picnic-style tables and cozy little deuces, and a long inviting candle-lit bar, the place serves some of the tastiest cocktails I’ve had in a while, all made from fresh juices, with a heavy focus on tequila (the list is quite extensive). I loved the spicy grapefruit margarita, made from house-infused jalapeno tequila with fresh squeezed grapefruit and lime juices, served on the rocks in with a brown sugared rim ($10). Forget the vitamin water, this is the perfect thirst quencher. The menu is modest and very reasonably priced (everything on the menu is $7), and filled with tasty and easy to gobble down antojitos like tacos stuffed with a choice of marinated steak with avocado, cilantro and onion, grilled citrus rubbed tilapia with avocado salsa, juicy marinated pork with pineapple and cilantro, and smoky pulled chicken topped with queso fresco and pickled onions. If tacos are not your thing, there are plenty of other tequila-friendly bites like pozole rojo (red posole) thick with shredded pork, and camarones borrachos, fat sweet shrimp sautéed in tequila with guajilo chiles and garlic, piled on top of green rice, and served with tortillas. (Did I mention everything on the menu is just $7?) BARRIO CHINO is at 253 Broome Street (b/w Orchard and Ludlow), 212-228-6710. Page 1
