“Il Buco Alimentari & Vineria”
Occasion: | Cuisine: | Area: | Cost: | Rating: |
Night Out | Italian | East Village | Moderate | Off the Charts |
Decorated like an Italian market with glass cases and old worn wooden nooks with jars of cured olives and dried spices and preserved lemons tucked inside, you can certainly get lost in the retail therapy if you are so inclined, but do make it past the counter to the dining room where communal tables and hightop counters share bring a sense of celebration to the air.
The restaurant is a big old party every night, with old friends bumping into each other in wide surprise in the crowded entryway/grocery, and large parties raising glasses of wine and passing wooden slabs piled high with salumi. That said, if you're looking for a quiet, intimate night, this is not your place. Tables are mostly communal (unless you're with a big group) and you're likely to be privy to many conversations that are not your own. But if you’ve had a bad day, it will end when you walk through these doors. Seriously. If you missed your train, if your boss hated your proposal, if your husband’s left you, it’s all good. This is a place of joy, of convivial spirit, of love and (just the right flash of lust) for this food.
On our way out, I stopped into the Alimentari, pondering purchasing everything I could fit onto the 6-train, when a woman came up beside me. “I just want to buy everything!” I said to her, rather drunk on the evening. “Me too! I love it here!” I turned to the woman to smile at our agreement. It was Rachael Ray. Such smart women, we are. Maybe next time, I won’t ignore her.
Il Buco Alimentari & Vineria is located at 53 Great Jones St, Btwn Lafayette & Bowery, (212) 837-2622.
